Širvintos District Municipality is an administrative territorial unit in the south-east of Lithuania. It is situated 50 km away from the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, on the Vilnius-Riga highway.
The centre of the district is Širvintos. There are 8 communities in the district: Alioniai, Čiobiškis, Gelvonai, Jauniūnai, Kernavė, Musninkai, Širvintos, Zibalai, 6 towns (Bagaslaviškis, Čiobiškis, Gelvonai, Kernavė, Musninkai, Zibalai) and 485 villages.
The Širvintos region is characterised by picturesque landscapes and exceptional natural and cultural heritage sites.
Tourists are attracted by the Kernavė hillforts and pagan culture, the Alioniai, Bartkuškis, Šešuolėliai, Lygaraistis telmological, Širvintos and Budeliai landscape reserves, manor houses and natural monuments. The first inhabitants of the district settled in this area from the 9th to the 13th century BC.
At present, the area of Širvintos District Municipality is 90,6 thousand ha, of which 55,73 % are agricultural areas, 28,47 % are forests, 2,42 % are waters, 2,09 % are towns and settlements, 2,09 % are industrial enterprises and roads, and 9,2 % are other areas. The district has 28 lakes and 7 ponds, and the rivers Neris, Musė and Širvinta.
